West Canyon leaves the main lake southeast of Gregory Butte and extends at least six miles even at lower lake levels. Its mouth is very wide, but its upper reaches are narrow and winding. Before the lake, hikers could follow West Canyon for many miles of red rock amphitheaters and shady cottonwoods. Despite its length, West Canyon does not offer a multitude of campsites, but there are possibilities. The major tributary on the right is Howland Canyon, which offers some beaches in higher lake levels.
